Track & Field Commissioner: Matthew Germann
About our Track & Field Commissioner:
This will be the 7th year of BARC’s Track & Field Program which is led by Matthew Germann. Matt currently teaches 8th grade math at Ballston Spa Middle School, and has been coaching for 28 seasons- 20 of those as the Varsity X-C, Indoor and Outdoor Track coach. During this time he’s had numerous athletes qualify for the NYS Championship meet in X-C and Track & Field- including seven top 8 finishers, four top 5 finishers, and a NYS and Federation champion in indoor track. Many of these athletes have also continued running at the college level, including scholarship athletes at both Division 1 & 2 schools.
About our program:
This program is a great experience for all of the people involved (staff & athletes). It promotes a FUN environment for young athletes to try out some of the events offered in track & field. The program introduces our younger athletes who are new to the sport (no experience necessary) to the fundamentals of high jump, long jump, relays, and some running events from sprinting to longer distances. This is all while giving experienced athletes in the sport more advanced coaching with the goal of improving their mechanics, form and technique in our running and field events, as well as hurdles.
Another benefit of our program is the community building we achieve by having varsity athletes volunteering their time to coach our younger athletes. This gives our current and former athletes a chance to be role models for our future student athletes, and allows us to have a much better coach to athlete ratio.
As a final note, even if your son/daughter might not be interested in track & field, running is a great life-long activity. Getting our elementary and middle school kids involved at an early age has countless benefits!
The objective of this program is to provide Ballston area students with a recreational track and field team. In this program athletes learn a variety of track & field sports & participate in a ‘mini meet’ at the end of the session. The fee for this program is $40 per player, with a discount for families registering 2 or more players . This program takes place on Wednesday evenings.
